Gangtou Model Museum

Rural Renewal

Honorable Mention, Q-Village Gangtou
International Young Designer Competition

Gangtou Village is located in the northeast of Huadu District, set up in the Yuan Dynasty. It has a history of nearly 600 years, and lots of ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties are well-preserved, providing valuable research materials for the architectural history of Lingnan. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is situated near Gangtou village six miles away; besides, several highways connect this village to the center of Guangzhou city. The convenience of transportation provides an opportunity to develop tourism and lots of potential tourists. Therefore, enhancing the core attraction of this village is the key point of this ancient building renovation project.

Given the large number of ancient buildings that remain in Gangtou Village, which may gradually disappear over time and vanish from people’s memory eventually, our team wanted to build a museum to record these marks of the times; due to the size limit of the site, we finally decide to use the architectural model museum to bring all ancient building into such a small place, exhibit, and record.

Among the available sites, we noticed that Building 2 and Building 3 were adjacent to each other, thus we regard them as one and design. Building 3 is the main body of the museum, and Building 2 serves as an affiliated building and provides service to locals. In daily use, both villagers and tourists can use the facilities of two buildings at different times.
